Disney's 'Camp Rock' scores big ratings

Disney Channel's Jonas Brothers movie "Camp Rock" debuted big Friday night, though it didn't match last year's record-setting "High School Musical 2."
"Camp Rock," which features a slew of musical performances, averaged 8.9 million total viewers at 8-10 p.m. Friday, making it the network's No. 2 most-watched original movie ever behind "HSM 2," according to Nielsen. "Camp Rock" pulled in about half of that movie's audience (17.2 million) in its Aug. 17 premiere.
In the kid demos, "Camp Rock" drew 3.5 million kids 6-11 and 3.4 million tweens 9-14, which Disney said was higher than "American Idol's" most recent season premiere and finale on Fox. The movie made Disney Channel TV's most-watched network from 8-10 p.m. ... Read More ...

Anna Maria, who besides starring in “Camp Rock” plays mean girl Ashley Dewitt on “Hannah Montana,” shared in an exclusive interview with Janelle So on “Kababayan L.A.” that she learned a lot about singing and acting through her famous grandmother, singer and actress Sylvia La Torre.
“I’m very close to my grandma—she’s quite the icon in the Philippines,” laughed Anna Maria.
“She taught me my first Filipino song “Bahay Kubo.” Whenever she’s on stage she says ‘Oh my apo, she’s following in my footsteps,’ and I can’t disagree. When it comes to singing and acting, I owe it all to her.”
Anna Maria shared that despite her Hollywood career, her parents still raise her with conservative Filipino values and rules.

I had the great chance to speak with Anna Maria Perez de Tagle (Ashley from HANNAH MONTANA) to celebrate her role in the upcoming Jonas Brothers movie from The Disney Channel – CAMP ROCK.
Tell me about CAMP ROCK.
Anna Maria Perez de Tagle: CAMP ROCK! is about a whole bunch of kids coming to this camp to discover and enhance their talents, like singing, dancing, rapping, drumming. And Mitchie comes to this camp, she’s played by Demi Lovato, she comes like a turtle. She’s very shy, she’s very reserved, but as the movie progresses, she gains a confidence and shows the camp how real and raw her talent really is. I play the girly-girl of the Mean Girl clique. She’s not so smart, she’s kind of a ditz, but her character changes completely towards the end of the movie. She’s obsessed with makeup hair, clothes, and lip gloss most of all. I talk about lip gloss 24/7 in the movie.
What about the character made you want to be in the movie?
I think just because Ella is kind of like Ashley DeWitt from Hannah [Montana]. And so it was kind of like I knew how to play this part. I didn’t have to go through many auditions. I just did two, and luckily the producers and the casting directors knew that I could play this role perfectly, so it was a lot of fun. I knew that I could probably make this role kind of fun.
Did you know anybody in the movie before you shot it?
I did, I knew Demi Lovato about 2 weeks before. We met on a show called Just Jordan, and when I found out she got Mitchie, I called her and said “Oh congrats” and like a week later, she found out I got Ella and she called me and she’s like “Congrats, we’re so excited!” and then I also met Alyson ... Cinderella Goes to Camp, and Prince Charming Sings

Some hacker needs to go to work on the Disney computer that randomly mixes the same 10 plot lines and 15 young actors to create new movies and television shows. One of the character threads in there, that of the spoiled teenage diva, desperately needs to be excised; it is so very, very tired that it has begun to drag down any script it finds its way into.

Like the one for “Camp Rock,” a heavily promoted musical movie featuring the engaging Jonas Brothers and arriving Friday on the Disney Channel (with subsequent weekend showings on ABC and ABC Family). The movie has some bright spots, but so much of it revolves around the resident diva of the title camp that it’s hard to focus on the good stuff; you’re too annoyed at having this lazily imagined character shoved down your throat for the zillionth time. ... Camp Rock Review - by LA Times

Welcome to "Camp Rock." The latest in Disney's line of musical cash registers made in the shape of a TV movie, it debuts tonight on the Disney Channel, debuts again Saturday on ABC's "Wonderful World of Disney," and debuts again Sunday on ABC Family, after which it will go on debuting around the world. You can already buy the soundtrack album, "Camp Rock: the Junior Novel," the "Camp Rock Rockstar Dreams Activity Book" and branded bedding, pajamas, things to drink from and eat out of, backpacks and capri pants.
Besides the singing and dancing, the heart of its pre-sold tween appeal is the presence of the mega-super popsters the Jonas Brothers, who are deeply enmeshed in Disney's cross-platforming empire, recording for its Hollywood Records, appearing on Radio Disney and prepping a Disney Channel sitcom, "J.O.N.A.S.!," whose acronym ("Junior Operatives Networking As Spies") should tell you all you need to know about that.
Those expecting a "Jonas Brothers movie" will be a little disappointed; brothers Nick and Kevin appear only intermittently, as two-thirds of the fictional musical group Connect 3. But there is a whole lot of Joe, the dreamy middle Jonas, as their bandmate Shane Gray, who as punishment for his negative attitude has been banished to a summer as a counselor at Camp Rock, a training ground for young rockers, of which he is also an alumnus. Like most princes charming, Shane is ultimately a secondary character, a foil to the princess, the agent who frees her from her metaphorical prison, who knows her deepest thoughts, who sees her as she is. ...
